Fall of Rome

Sweet Darkness

I composed this piece during a summer program for composers at the San Francisco Conservatory. My teacher is on the piano. The others are conservatory musicians.

  1. Superb stuff, Naren! Thanks very much for sharing these pieces!

I loved the Fall of Rome. It is a haunting melody. You rock dude!

  2. You need a bit more dynamics in your compositions. (Or it could just be the quality of the audio in the recording, where the dynamics didn’t quite come through nearly as well as one might have wished.) Otherwise it tends to get boring after a bit. “Meadows” for example tended to sound too crowded and noisy; i’d have expected the soft, sparse tinkle of cow-bells and the occasional breeze in an otherwise wide green expanse, with the mountains in the distance ….

Fall of Rome and Vampirism were both very good in parts though. I do see your clear preference for the toccata in nearly all of your compositions above!

    Keep up the good work!!

    • I agree with you completely. In fact, I have recently noted down “Meadows” and put some dynamics in it. However, when I recorded this, I just had it memorized and I did not want to memorize anything more than the notes, tempo changes, and articulation. But thanks for the feedback!

Hey Naren, Fantastic!! The only way I can tell a good composition is if it sends a shiver up my spine – and Sweet Darkness definitely did that!!

I was wondering if there’s some way you could publish / upload the sheet music for some of the compositions for a piano – I’d love to try my hand at playing them too…

Naren, Congratulations! Sweet Darkness is fantastic. Very apt name, as the composition to me seemed just that. And haunting.
Keep up the good work. I’ll show this to Sidharth today – you’re an inspiration to the younger kids!
